Key Ideans and Details:
The student must be able to:
  • cite specific evidence from the text.
  • identify the main idea of a text.
  • be able to draw conclusion based on text.
  • construct a summary based on what is given and not prior knowledge or opinions.
  • follow multistep procedures in an experiment and take measurements.
Craft and Structure:
The student must be able to:
  • determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and scientific words.
  • analyze how and why the author chose to organize the text this way.
  • determine and examine the author's purpose for this scientific writing.
Integration of Knowledge and Ideas:
The student must be able to:
  • integrate scientific words/phrases with a visual such as a flowchart, diagram, model, graph, or table.
  • distinguish between fact and opinion of scientific text based on the text and not opinion.
  • compare/Contrast information from the text, experiments, simulations, videos, or multimedia sources.
Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity :
The student must be able to:
  • to read and comprehend complex scientific texts independently and proficiently by the end of eighth grade.
